About Feltoast
A celebration of the perfect slice
The Mission
Feltoast exists for one reason: to find and celebrate great french toast. Not good french toast—great french toast. The kind that makes you pause mid-bite. The kind worth crossing town for on a Sunday morning.
Every review is honest, thorough, and written with the understanding that someone might actually drive thirty minutes based on these words. That's a responsibility taken seriously here.
What Makes Great French Toast
The perfect french toast is a study in contrasts. Crisp exterior, custardy interior. Sweet enough to satisfy, not so sweet it overwhelms. It should taste like breakfast, not dessert—though the line between them is admittedly thin.
The bread matters. Brioche brings richness. Challah offers structure. Sourdough adds complexity. There's no single correct answer, but there are wrong ones.
The egg mixture matters. Too thin and it won't cling. Too thick and it sits on the surface like a mask. The best versions soak through, creating that gradient from golden crust to pillowy center.
Execution matters most. The right temperature. The right timing. The attention that transforms simple ingredients into something memorable.
The Rating System
Every review includes ratings across five categories:
- Taste — The fundamental question: does it taste good?
- Presentation — How it looks on the plate matters
- Value — Quality relative to price
- Creativity — Points for doing something interesting
- Overall — The complete experience
Ratings use a 1-5 scale. A 3 is average—perfectly acceptable. A 4 is good, worth recommending. A 5 is exceptional, worth seeking out. Ratings below 3 are reserved for genuine disappointments.
